Starting Out

  • Identify and prioritize your top organizations. Determine which match your career interest areas. Print the "My Personal Employer List" to create your own quick list.
  • Do not spend too much time waiting in line.Try to meet as many recruiters as possible.
  • Display confidence and enthusiasm when interacting with recruiters. Offer a firm handshake, and make good eye contact.

Meeting the Recruiters

  • Introduce yourself – include your major and graduation date. Provide additional information about your background and experiences. Offer a copy of your resume.
  • Indicate why you are interested in this particular employer. Obtain information about the availability of positions in your interest areas. Determine requirements to apply for a position.

Scheduling an Interview(s)

  • Ask employers about interviewing opportunities and make an appointment for later in the day - primarily between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. This is a very full and hectic hour – the more focused you are the more productive you will be in setting interviews. However, many will also schedule interviews for after 10:00 a.m. Print the “My Interview Schedule” form to create your interview schedule.
  • Know what you want. Be prepared to discuss the kind of position in which you are interested.
  • Know what you have to offer. Be prepared to discuss your experiences, education, skills, etc. with details and specific information about your background, particularly your student-teaching and other education-related experiences.
  • Know what to ask. Be prepared to ask questions about the school, position, etc. Determine their standard hiring timetable.
  • Determine the next step(s) in the hiring process and be prepared for any follow-up communications.

After Career Day

  • Within a few days, send a thank you note to each recruiter with whom you met. Be sure to communicate your continued interest in the organization/position. If possible, mention something specific about the organization/position that is of interest to you.
  • If you had an initial interview the day of the event, confirm with the representative the next steps in the hiring process that were discussed at the end of the interview.
